How to make firewood from tree trunks

Wood mauls work well, manually.

That and they double as a sledge on the backside with a few wedges if you run into a really tough one.

Most wood if if even a little bit seasoned you can almost just passively swing at it and split it with them, as they are heavy made for it.

awwww, what cute little tools for the kids to use. Get a real maul - 12 or 15 pounder.

Omg, so glad I watched a couple other videos in the thread - the tire idea is brilliant. Those who have split wood (without a tire) know that it's thwack, then pick up 2 pieces off the ground.

A guy on alt.home.repair posted this video and I thought it was really impressive. I always wondered how those bundles of firewood outside gas stations were made. Now I know.

The vids a little long at 4mins but you really only need to see the first minute or so to get the idea. It reminds me of the apple slicer I use when I make my kids lunches.

Thats most likely birch wood judging by the bark (my buddy looked at it said could be poplar). And probably frozen too given the snow on the ground.

An axe like this is works best on straight grained wood. I dont think it would work at all on knotty hardwoods. You'd need the mass concentrated in the head of a maul to deliver the force necessary for splitting. Let me see him try some oak, maple or gum logs...

This axe makes a fine kindling wood axe but I already have a small hatchet for that. And I would't spend $250 for it anyway.

I think the best thing about this video is the use of the tire.
