Your best bet is to go to "bootdisk.com" ....... they have an excellent assortment of downloadable boot disks.

AFAIK, there is no way to do it within XP

Got to the floppy drive in XP - put in floppy disk - right click - format - tick box 'create an MSDOS startup disk' - start

That should do it.

That will get you a DOS prompt, it will not have have any of the tools for formatting or anything else. IE: no fdisk, no format..:)

Yes you can make Win98 bootCD with Nero, but you need to have a Win98 boot floppy allready and a floppy drive. During the process of creating the boot CD, Nero will ask you to put a win98 boot disk into drive A:, then it sucks the files off there and puts them on the CD. I have a Win98SE bootCD and will never go back to floppy boot if I can. It is a lot faster than floppy.

Budman, is it for Win98?

I have bootable XP, my XP doesnt' have a problem, i just need to format my old system and reinstall the os, which is a Win98se. that system doesn't support boot from CD, so i need a floppy boot.

It will get you to to a DOS prompt with FDISK and CD support so he can then continue setup from the 98 CD and format.
Which is what was required.

another question ...

the xp system, i don't have a floppy drive installed. i grab the floppy drive from the slow system and install it to my faster(xp) drive. Now the floppy drive has the led light on forever. will not turn off even when xp is loaded. when i put a floppy in, it won't regonize it.

i want to know there is red line on the cable(connect from motherboard to drive). according to the floppy drive, is the red line on the right or on te left.?

that usually indicates the ribbon cable is installed the wrong way........ just turn it around. Some drives have the red line (pin 1) on the left, and some on the right. Usually it goes on the same side as power connector, but that is not a hard and fast rule. Just switch it.:)

To answer the question, yes, it is normal for that pin to be missing. Also, the side with the missing pin is the side the red stripe should be on. I'm really not sure why your drive isn't working, double check everything, try different cable, try drive in another pc, try another drive in that pc.....etc.
