how to make a ?rollover? cable

i read in one thread that to connect to the 'console' port on old hubs/routers you need a serial -> rj45 cable
is this a real thing? correct usage?
how to make it if it is?

thanks
david

You can make one real easy. Get some CAT5 cable, two rj45 connectors, and some crimpers. For a rollover cable, the wire color order you start with doesn't matter, just flip the connector 180 degrees on the other end.

The cable is rj45 to rj45. You need a serial port adaptor to plug it into your serial port on your computer. Then you use Hyperterminal or Secure CRT terminal emulation program to console in.

do you think radio shack will have rj45 to serial adapters? what is serial actually called?
also, where can i get Secure CRT?

thanks guys

kw3i,

Cool. A few more customers like you, and I'll be able to retire.🙂

crazychicken,

A serial is also known as a DB9 or DB25. I don't know if Radio Shack carries the adapter, but they are pretty common. Just make sure you get an RJ45 version, not an RJ11 version; both are made.
