I'm working on making my computer as quiet as possible. Right now I'm cooling it with three Panaflo fans that are very quiet, and I am happy with their noise level. The thing that's bothering me about the noise level now, is the sound of the hard drives spinning (a 60GB Maxtor and an old 12GB IBM).
So here's what I want to do. I want to find a way to spin drive one hard drive at a time, on command, without the other one spinning down. Point being, so I can hear each one alone and get a better idea of what it sounds like. Does anyone know a method that will let me spin down a drive, without having to let it idle a fixed amount of time for power saving to kick in? It would have to let me do each one independently in order for it to work.
Edit: BTW, I want to do this without having to mess with unhooking my case, or anything like that.
