how to mail compact flash memory?

I heard USPS' new device will permanently damage the memory cards in mail. How to send it then? Fedex is too expensive.

To provide some credibility to this rumor, how about indicating why? What are we talking about? X-Ray? Magnetic Resonance? Crushing between steel rollers? Why would CF modules be any different than SmartMedia, Memory Sticks, HDDs, CDRs, etc., etc. Entire motherboards are shipped by UPS. Got a link to this rumor?

This is not a rumour, it's confirmed - though the newspaper I read it in (The Toronto Star) hasn't put that article online yet. It was about a recent Compact Flash makers' conference where one of the major aims was to get the word out: Not only will using the USPS to mail flash memory erase any data on that card, it'll make the card unusable. This is on account of (x-ray I believe I read) machines the USPS is using the sterilize packages passing through the system.

Options? Use Fedex or UPS, I think. Thankfully Canada Post is taking no such measures so you up here, you can still use their service to send CompactFlash/SmartMedia/MMC/etc.

It's now a high grade rumor. 🙂 XRay cannot harm magnetic media. What might be harmed in CF are the onboard electronics. There is microcircuitry present in a CF module. But still, I would like to see something technical as to the whys and wherefores. If it is true, then ANY electronics equipment would be damaged by such security equipment . . . not just CF modules.

BTW . . . newspaper articles confirm nothing. They are often victims of self confirmation. Confirmation must come from a credible scientific or technical source.

I just shipped a digital camera complete with batteries and media installed. It should arrive at its Florida destination Friday. My bet is that the recipient will take it out of the box and take a picture with it. It is going by UPS.

It is going by UPS.

Yes but the thread is on USPS, the United States Postal Service.

I would like to find more about this. I frequently ship electronics with Priority Mail. Sure beats driving a half hout to UPS or FedEx office.

I believe this issue only affects certain zip codes (those in and around D.C.), they are not irradiating mail nationwide (yet).
