How to know which update to download from MS site?

There is alaways a plethora of security and other updates on MS site. I have win XP Professional SP1 . There are some updates which say 'for winXP' while some say WinXP SP1, which ones to download? All or Omly SP1s?
Please answer?
 
If it is a security/critical update and if it's found when you go through Windows Update you should download it. Doesn't amtter what it says as far as SP1 or not. Just download all critical updates and patches.
