How to know whether linux will work on laptop?

THinking about installing linux on a laptop. Is there any way to tell if the chosen distro will work with all the wacky odd laptop bits (modem, dvd drive, etc) pre-install?

There are some distros that will run on minimal machines. Most will not. Look at Linux.org and pick one of the distros and you will find a place where it will tell you what hardware is required.
You might also try one of the live distros such as KNOPPIX that runs from the CD but it takes quite a bit of memory for it to run decent.
