how to keep programs (Ms Money 99) from cutting the internet connection

There are some programs (Ms Money 99 for example) that want to close the internet connection when you close the program.
This can be soooo annoying.
They display some fvcking dialogue window if you want to cut the connection and if you mistakenly click yes, you're cut off.
I just did that and it disconnected a huge file download (140 of 400MB)!!!
To say I am angry is the understatement of the year.
So how can I keep programs like these from meddling with the i-connection?
(I found nothing like this under the Options in the program)

Look in the configuration options and tell the program to connect through the network or LAN. It'll work as long as your net connection is running, and time out otherwise, but will not attept to close anything when you exit because LAN and network connections are seen as "permanent"
