How to keep hard drives cool?

I have 2 hdds' that I have mounted one on top if the other in the HDD cage. Theres about 3/16th" between them. If I don't have the big 120MM case fan on ( I have wired to a switch) they get about 50C - that seems kinda hot to me. If I leave the fan on, they drop to about 35C. Its just that the fan is a little loud.

Get a quieter fan, captain.

Hmmm. Fan speed controller sounds good. But the fan has the power supply connector, not the small 3 pin. Does that matter?

it doesn't take much airflow to cool hard drives down. Hooking up the fan to 5v will silence it yet provide enough airflow to keep them cooled down

If you want to suspend them, you can attach some aluminum U-channel to the sides, which will drop the temp with the same amount of airflow.
