How to keep cats off you lawn?

Problem: I keep discovering landmines in my front yard. Several cats roam the neighborhood, don't know who they belong to.

I can think of several methods that I would like to use to make it stop..... but I really need something safe and legal. I've seen some spray on products that claim to be "natural" and "useful in conjuntion to a good training regime". I don't really want to be that gentle with them.... and I certaintly am not involved in training them where they can and can't go. But at the same time, I run around on the lawn with my 1 year old son, so no poison or anything.

Maybe you should hire that senile old man to watch over your lawn with a shotgun. He has a good resume for it.

until the owners stop the roaming, i really dont see how you can do anything (legal) about it. figure out what cat lives where, talk to the owner, and thats it. if it persists, call your local animal authorities.

I don't know what you are talking about... please no joke replies. Yes I realize this situation seems like an invitation for a hilarious joke but believe me I've already covered that. Now I'm looking for something that will actually help.

Yes. Automatic sprinklers should do the trick. They can never seem to figure that one out.

If you catch them out there, get a water pistol and just spray 'em. Don't shout or anything, so they won't associate it with you. Just like the sprinklers they get all freaked out by sprayed water.

Landmines?

Are they stray cats or are they more like someone's pet that is out roaming around?

If they are somewhat friendly (or someone's pet that let's it go out illegally roaming around), I'd try to trap them and take them to the humane society.

If they are completely stray/feral, then I've heard you can soak rags in amonia and place them in areas on the yard and they won't go near them because of the smell.

That sprinkler looks pretty cool. I have had this problem in the past and never even thought of it. Other than poisoning the cats, I had nothing.

I'll remember it for future reference.

There are special sprays/tablets that emit faint smell cats can't stand. Humans don't notice it, but cats stay the hell away. Usually you put it on garbage cans if cats roam in it, but you could try it on your lawn.

Actually there are both safe and legal ways. Get a gun and shot them, its your property and..... they are getting shot :) Both safe and legal.

Humane cat traps. After having to pay to get them out of kitty jail a couple times they might start keeping their cats inside.
