How to keep a machine from taking an ip address?

My cable isp gives me 4 ip addresses. I've got all my computers going through a switch and it works pretty well and each computer gets its own ip address. But I need to connect one of my computers to the switch and not have it grab an ip address. How do I hook up the computer and have it not grab one of the 4 ip addresses?

I think I could probably hook up that computer last to the switch after all the other ip addresses are taken, but that's not possible (it's a long story.)

I've unchecked tcp/ip, QoS pakcet scheduler and file and printer sharing. When I check the nic, it says that no ip address has been assigned (since it's not even supposed to be using tcp/ip). But when I call my host, they say they can see my computer has taken, or reservered or whatever the right word is, one of the ips. It's driving me nuts.

go ahead and check tcp/IP so you can configure it.
configure it tot the static address you want it to have.

I also did that and it still grabbed an ip. (I called my ISP to check and they saw my NIC attatched to an ip) I set it to some nonsense like 192.168.2.99.

What is your External IP, a Real External or a private IP that you get from a secondary share?

If your IP is a Real External what do want the 4th computer to do, it can Not be part of the Network if it is on a simple switch, so might as well disable the Network on this computer.

Okay, it all started working. I've been hacking away at this problem for 3 nights now, and something finally told me "you probably have it right. Just reset everything." Anyway, shut everything down and brought it back up 15 minutes later and BOOM! It works!

What I did was disable TCP/IP on the NIC. I guess my ISP just had to unlink my NIC mac addresses from the ip before it could assign it to another computer which I guess required turning off the cable modem for a couple of minutes.

Anyway, thanks for the help guys.

Glad it is working.

That reminds me an issue that is probably very prevalent.

At times when we install or change Windows installation the OS will insists on rebooting.

A lot of time it does not insisting on rebooting. However I would suggest rebooting after any major changes any way since many time there would be multiple entries in the Registry concerning the same settings, and unless you reboot the old settings would stay dominant

As far as I am concerning the idea of 24/7 is a good idea as long as the system is a working system that No Setup Changes and Experimentations is done, otherwise often rebooting are Very advisable.
