i was playing basketball today. Apparently sitting on my ass all day has really gotten me in shape, since i can grab rim from a standstill now. Anyways... i havent been working out at all, so i wanna know if anyone knows what to do to get more ups? do strength shoes work?

i'm like 5'11" and asian. i really think it would be awesome if i threw down a dunk in a pickup game one of these days. you dont usually see guys under 6 feet and especially asian dunking

Practice jumping and lots of it. I heard someone on ATOT post something on the lines of jumping over chairs and stools and stuff? I bet this would make you jump higher.

Squating will help develop power in the legs. I say you just have to practice jumping and lots of it. I'm 5"10 and asian and I can jump pretty high. I got to get back to the school gym sometime and try a dunk:)

back when I was in shape I could grab rim, but never managed to come close to dunking.
I weighed too much 5' 9.5" and 205 lbs

Contrary to popular belief calf muscles are not the muscles you need to build up in order to build up some ups.

Glutes and Hamstring are the primary movers and quads as well.

If you don't strength train, I recommend Deadlifts (stiff-legged and conventional) and Deep Squats (break parallel)

Those strength shoes increased my vetical by about 8 inches. Increased my friends by about 13. He was doing windmills and 360's by the end of the season. Its not easy its one of the hardest workouts ive ever used. I would come inside and take a shower and sweat for about an hour after the shower even. Should be prescribed for sleeplesness lol i used to fall to sleep early during those days

when i was 5'9.5" and 230, i could grab rim.
but now i am too fat. haha

i think u should just do a lot of jumping excercises. my old roommate and i would do this:

go on one side of backboard, facing the backboard. take the ball and bounce it off the backboard. then jump in the air nad alley oop it back to the backboard.

then do it on the other side.

then do it back and forth from side to side.

that was a crazy ass work out.

but it helps!

I wouldn't totally ignore calf muscles though. It's all about balance of all the muscles. Don't build up your leg muscles so ridiculously big that you have no mobility. You just need to tone it up. I do calf raisers to tone up the calf muscles and squats for the leg. This is what I did to get some more vertical on my jump. When practicing, I usually wear shoes that are a heavier than I normally play with, ie: add some weight to them. I am also 5'11", about 160lbs. I surprise some people when I come down the lane and stuff right infront of their face. To get a successful dunk 90% of the time, your elbow should be able to reach the rim. You may be able to do it with less vertical, but sometime the balls just bounce off the other side of the rim. I get that a lot when I couldn't get enough lift on my jump.

Horse stances, and cat stances especially will give much more jumping capability. Do it long enough, and you can get a 5' vertical jump.

tried shows, working out, BUT, the thing that worked best for me (am 5.10ish also) is just do a TON of sprints.. works the whole leg well. Just remember to make sure u push yourself, doing 2 100 yard sprints isnt gonna cut it, since u are already most of the way there, u need to make sure u are working the muscles out well..

Sprinting upstairs can help as well..

As someone said earlier its not just the calves but also the hamstrings and glutes. The best exercise for that is squatting. Also may wanna try lunges as well. Running up hills also will work both of these. Theres a program we did for football and track that used boxes. There was about 7 of them. First one was about a feet, 2nd one 2 feet~3feet and the third one which was the hardest was ~4-5 feet. Then it came back down to 2~3 and finally one. The boxes would be placed in a stright line with about ~4 feet between them so you would jump on one, then the jump off to ground, jump to next one, jump on ground. If ya don't know what a squat or lunge is check out my site, it has lots stuff on fitness, weightlifting etc. here
