How to install XP and Ubuntu from scratch

I will be installing XP and Ubuntu on a brand new 750gb drive.
What's the best way to go about it?

Is it a safe bet to first make a 50gb partition for installing xp and leaving the rest of the space unpartitioned and worry about that later? Or should I create all necessary partitions right away? I'm confused!!!

I normally do just what you are planning, make a windows partition, install the OS & then install linux and let it use the unpartitioned space.

On a 750 though I would do something like 50 for windows, 20 for Ubuntu (unpartitioned) and the rest as a data drive formatted in FAT32 (or ntfs if you are gonna use ntfs-3g or whatever).
