How to install win (98 or 2K) on an NTFS drive?

Hmm... I just got a new pc - and I would like to be able to boot into my old harddrive (winXP) because there are some things there i'd like to salvage, before I format and reinstall XP to fit my new hardware.

So I have two harddrives - 1 with XP, and 1 without any OS, just storage (NTFS).

I need to either get into winXP on my 1st hd, or install win2k on my 2nd.
How do I do this? When i boot up with CD-rom, it tells me that there's no place to
put a swapfile, when I try to install win2k... same with 98..

And on my first HD it says that that I have to make a dos-partition, but I have no room for it.

- I unfortunately can't simply boot normally with my 1st drive and get into windows that way, then it comes up
with a blue screen and says "to protect your hardware windows is shutting now - run chkdisk /f and remove any
newly installed drives, and try again."

Win98 can't read NTFS partitions!
Win2k can read both FAT32 and NTFS.

So if you want both Win2k and Win98 on the same HDD, it has to be FAT32.

well that helped a lot ??? I know that win98 cant read NTFS, damnit, thats why I ask ;) I _dont_ want both OS'es on the same HD,
I just want to be able to startup windows, so that I can move my stuff from the 1st HD to the 2nd one, and then I can format the first one, install drivers for new system etc.

aaa... well I didn't read your post now did I :D

yeye well my tip is put your xp cd into your cd drive and then boot from it and repair your xp install.

don't chose the first option to repair your install... it's called automatic recovery or something, it just doesn't work... instead do as you would installing it for the first time and then chose repair when you have the 3 options:

repair
reinstall
or install in another folder

I don't have the XP cd anymore, it got scratched :( - and when I want to install 2k instead from cd, it says "no place to put swap file" and quits even before I get the option to install!

(Change your thread title, if that's in error.)
To do what you're aiming for, set the HD (which had WinXp installed) jumpered as Master, the "storage" drive jumpered as slave.
Then make bios settings: boot-up order as "CD" first. Boot with WinXP/Win2k CD inserted in CD drive and install/reinstall WinXP/Win2k from there.
To dual-boot HD1 & HD2, whether WinXP & Win2k or WinXp & WinXP, the "storage" HD's primary partition must be made active. Disconnect the Master HD, then the "storage HD" can be made "active" and bootable (using boot floppy & FDISK, or else the bootable CD method). Once made bootable, re-connect the Master HD. Now either drive can boot up, depending on which one is selected in bios to boot from.

How did scratching the CD make it disappear?
Maybe some automobile polishing compound would fix it.
May need to boot from floppy and from dos prompt delete "pagefile.sys", if you're low on HD space.

Oh sorry hadn't seen the thing about the title at all, I meant that I wanted to install 98 _or_ 2k, as I have both ;)

- Vailr, my computer says that it doesn't have anywhere to put the swap file, when I try to do that =(

That's a non-problem. Call M$ and they will exchange it for a new one.
