Hey guys, I just recently installed Ubuntu again to try 10.04 and I like it a lot. No drivers issues, and everything is fast. I can have 20 tabs on and Youtube and VLC can play videos fine. Now, I have another thing that I am missing -- thinkDesktop.

Thinkorswim says it compatible with linux as it is based on the Java platform. I am no coding or unix junkie by any means, but I am having troubles (following directions) installing it on Ubuntu. Do I need Java VM? If so, how do I install it? Can someone try this and/or explain it in even more "layman" terms? Also, if anyone can refer me to somewhere where I can learn basic unix command lines to install this stuff that would be great. Thanks!

Linux Instructions: Install thinkDesktop (710 KB)

1. Click "Install thinkdesktop" to download the thinkorswim installer to a directory on your PC.
2. After downloading open a shell and CD to the directory where you downloaded the installer.
3. At the prompt type: sh ./thinkorswim_installer.sh.

For more thorough Ubuntu installation instructions click here.

Note: If you do not have a Java virtual machine installed, you may need to download one from Sun's Java web site or contact your OS manufacturer.

the ubuntu howto pdf looks like a pretty decent set of directions, annoying but straightforward at a glance...

without walking you through all of it (partly because...what fun is that? and im lazy this morning) go here to get some command line practice, maybe that will get you going

I got Java to download through terminal which was pretty cool, but I did not have enough space in my file system. ?? Anyway to reallocate more space? I deleted my Lenovo Service 003 partition (recovery, I believe), and now I can't boot through windows loader through the boot selection, and I can't sign on to Ubuntu. :(
