How to install Linux without ruining windows Os in the same HDD

ok i tried this before and it didn't work.
i used partition magic
created a 20Gb partition from my 160Gb HDD and tried to install Linux on it
ruined my windows
had to reformat
please i need a step by step guide and if possible using partition magic.
i plan on installing open SUSE .. yes im a newbie on Linux but everyone was once so please help me

1. Delete the 20 gig partition and leave it as unallocated space.
2. Boot from the Suse Install disk.
3. Accept the Suse default partitions.
4. Install Suse.
5. Make sure the boot loader ( Default in Suse is Grub ) is set to install itself on the MBR of the drive.
6. When this is completed you should have a dual boot system set up in Grub for going to Windows or Suse.

Depending on your needs, you could also use a virtual machine to run linux. Look up VMWare Player + VMXBuilder. Also Microsoft Virtual PC does the same thing.

Both solutions are free.

It is less of a pain than dual booting, because you don't have to shutdown windows to switch to linux.
