How to install Half Life 2 Without Steam?

Finally got my copy of half life and the first dreaded thing I noticed is that it installed Steam.

I hate Steam and have no use for it and would like to remove it. I really don't care about online multiplayer gameplay at least until I finish the single player game.

And with everything I hear about valve disabling some keys for some reason or other I do not want to be at any risk of loosing the single player for any reason, so I do not want to link Half Life to any Steam account until I have to.

Anybody know if I can run/activate the game without running steam and not create any steam account for it yet.

Thanks

I posted in the wrong forum at first here..

I don't know if it can happen but I don't want to be dependant on my internet connection and I most definitely want to find my single player disabled for whatever reason.

You need to unlock the game through Steam, but after that you don't need to connect to the internet. You probably still need Steam though to run your game.

you can't install hl2 without steam, period. there is no way around it without getting your cd key banned.

Thanks, that makes me feel better. So does that mean that the single player cannot be disabled if the steam account is locked for some reason.

And if that is the case, is it possible to transfer the registration to another system or will registration still be possible with a locked account.

I've played HL2 on two different computers. It worked fine for me, but I have the Steam version of the game (no CD required). Also, you can use Steam in offline mode after you activate HL2 so you won't even need to log in.

In other words, "how can I install my friends HL2 without Steam seeing and busting me?"

In the time it took me to write my response, the question had already been answered - several times - so never mind.

I just tried registering with my CD key and after a while got the our servers are busy and cannot accommodate the request error. Continuing to say that I cannot play the game until it is complete. Also that window was frozen meaning I had to kill steam to get rid of it.

Make that 2 people. No problems whatsoever. I even activated my game at midnight the day it was released and it worked flawlessly.

If you want to see why people dislike steam, go to their own website steampowered.com.
What I'm more pissed off about is the fact they had a whole extra year and they couldn't even get a passable multiplayer going in the game. Yeah I know there are some mods coming out which will let you do it but I kind of feel like it should of been in there natively from the start. It does come with CS:Source but I dislike counterstrike...I do not want to play this old ass game with spiffier new graphics.

Back on topic, lots of people have had problems with Steam.

half life isn't a multiplayer game. why is it a requirement? it's a great single player game, something that's lacking these days. i'm on their site, looks good to me...

all I have to say is "wah."
I bought my copy from steam, downloaded it, played it up till Highway 17, then busted my ankle so I cant go up to my desktop computer (one flight of stairs up in my house). But up till H-17, I didnt have any issues at all, and honestly, I'm dying to be able to walk up stairs again.

It's such a hassle to do that. Plus, I'm supposed to keep my leg elevated whenever I can. I'd rather heal faster than play the best FPS in recent memory... although, I really wanna play :)

Im kind of pissed now I DIDN'T buy from Steam and bought retail. I thought I would be getting something nicer with the retail package but you don't get a manual or even a jewel cases. Just a 5 cds in paper sleeves and a tiny paper quick key guid. Then after the massive long 5 CD install you again have to wait for Steam to unlock the game you just installed.

But worst of all is I still have to use the CD in my drive to play the game where as if I just bought it off Steam I wouldn't need to dig out the CD everytime I just wanted to pop on and play for a few minutes.
