how to install drivers on Ubuntu server?

i have a raid controller :3Ware 9650SE-8LPML

I need to install the driver so i can setup my raid array because wedmin isnt seeing any of the 3 drives on the card. It only detects the USB drive that is running Ubuntu server. Im new and my head is spinning. can anyone walk me through installing driver

These are for Debian Squeeze, so I don't know how well they'd work for you. If it's a new install, it won't hurt to try them. If you break something, you can reinstall and fix it. Otherwise, you could look into getting a new controller.

Look for instruction/guideline on the manufacturer's website. Contact them if no information is available.

Generally you do not have to install drivers as they are already included in the kernel. Before you force install anything or modify kernel, search online to find out whether your hardware is or is not included in the kernel. For all you know it could be some configuration issue rather than lack of driver.

It depends on what version of Ubuntu you have and what kernel you are using. If you are using a 2.6 or 2.4 kernel, they are on 3ware's site (you need to compile them though):

That card is pretty dated, and should work out of the box on Ubuntu Server.

You can setup the array via the WebBIOS (or whatever 3ware calls it) or if you prefer, you can use tw_cli, which you'd have to download and install. Then it'll just show up as /dev/sda

There is some page that has .deb packages for the most common hardware RAID controllers (for example, LSI only ships MegaCli in an rpm).
