Anyone have any useful tips, or weblinks, on how to install an ide cd-burner?

I know how to install ram, but that's all the knowledge I have on installing things on computers.

I feel like I can install the burner, but I'm worried about possible frying of the ide chips, and my hardrive if the connectors are hooked up wrong. Any precautions from that happening?

Thanks in advance!

Are you replacing the other drive or putting this in addition?

Remember to set the jumpers accordingly.. Master or slave.

Red on the IDE cable towards the power input on the burner, red line towards the "1" on the MB.

You can't really fry out the IDE channels, it just won't work if they're backwards.

I wouldn't worry about frying any chips. The worst that will happen if you install it incorrectly is that the computer won't recognize your burner. Now the important thing with installing a burner is one:

Make sure the red strip matches up with the L1 pin. All CDROMs usually have the L1 pin on the right side of the connecter.

Another thing to note is that ide has a primary and secondary slot. Your bootup Harddrive is connected to your primary ide controller. Eech controller has a master connection and slave connection. I would recommend the following setup:

Hard drive on Primary Master
CDROM on Primary Slave
CD Burner on Secondary Master.

Just make sure the Harddrive and CDROM are not on the same controller. This isn't necessarily going to mess things up if you don't do this but it will clear up any compatibility problems when you try and burn a cd (CD's don't burn very well when your copying data to and from the same controller.)

Good luck

Sorry, forgot to mention I'm adding a new drive to my Dell with the big open slot under the dvd-rom.

I've never fried anything ide. It's be a pretty hard task. Just make sure you know the difference between 4-pin molex and 40-pin ide and you'll be fine.
