I have 2 old computers. Removed the hard drive from one and put it in the other. Checked the bios and it detected the new hard drive (shows: Hard Drive 0 - 1700 MB, Hard Drive 1 - 5000 MB "new"). Loaded windows and it dected a port and went on like nothing happened. Checked "My Computer" which shows only my old C: drive. Checked "Device Manager" and it shows both Primary IDE and Secondary IDE drives under Hard Disk Controller. Checked "Add New Hardware", found nothing. Tried "FDisk" but it asked me a question about not adding any new drives so I skipped it. This is a WD Caviar 35100 (5 Gig).

Do I have to install something in Windows (98) for it to dectect the new drive? I dont have any installation files or drivers for the drive.

Did the drive you moved have any data on it or had it been wiped clean?

What OS was/is on this drive?

If the BIOS sees it okay you may need to partition and format it with FAT.

Before you partition and format go into Control Panel and try to detect any New Hardware.

Go thru all the steps and see if that will solve your problem.

nope, as i said in my first post, the "add new hardware" finds nothing probably because the new hard drive is already detected as a second drive in the device manager. but i thought the drive doesnt just appear, i remember when i first bought a hard drive 5 years ago, i had to install software for it. does anyone know if i have to install software in order to create a drive? and how do i partition and format? thanks

Go to Western Digital download their software to format their drives. Make a bootable floppy with the program. It'll probably have a menu where you can select the drive you
want formatted.

You don't need any additional drivers anymore. Then are included with 98.

You can use the method above or -

Do you have a floppy boot disk? Sometimes one is included with your OS, or you can make one during the installation process or open Control Panel for a StartUp Disk option under Add/Remove Programs. Insert this floppy and reboot. It should load the files from the floppy and then you'll get an "A:" prompt.
Now you are ready to format. Type "E:" and enter. If you get an "E:" prompt then type: format E: and enter. If you get an invalid drive or something like that then type "D:" and enter. At the D: prompt type: format D: and enter. When the format finishes you can name it or just hit enter, remove the floppy and reboot.
