How to increase ventilation/fresh air in small apartment?

Hey guys, figured i'd toss this here as I bet there are a lot of people who have experience with this.

I have a 1 bedroom apartment and unfortunately it only has 2 windows I can open and they are both on the same wall in the living room. So I can't get any cross airflow, and my bedroom area gets a lack of fresh air flow.

Any tips on improving ventilation? I have a 20" box fan I pointed out a window but without a window on the other side of the room to let fresh air in on the other side, it only really seems to cool off the area of the room closest to the window. The main problem is I keep waking up in the middle of the night feeling like I need fresh air.

Maybe try putting fans in both windows, one pointed out, and the other in.

You don't have any windows in your bedroom? That's messed up.

Box fans in windows blowing in. Box fan in bedroom door blowing in. Earplugs may be required.

Well lol, actually there is a window in the bedroom, but its covered by boxes (my boxes) and needs a screen.

Im too lazy to move the boxes and go buy a new screen apparently.

Well... if it doesn't have a screen, then YOU DON'T HAVE TO REMOVE THE SCREEN WHEN YOU INSTALL THE WINDOW A/C UNIT!

Problem solved. I've found A/C units at goodwills and pawn shops for like $50. Start craigslisting.

Room divider? Is it possible to make some kind of partition so that you're not just sucking air into one window and immediately blowing it out the other?

Would any of you be interested in a window fan that pumped in fresh air from the outside but blocked the sound?
I live on a college campus and there's always drunk people outside my window yelling and stuff, and its hot and stuffy in my room so I like having the window open. So I designed my fan that blocks outside noise and pumps in fresh air, and just built one and it works really well. Is this something that a lot of people would use? Should i try to manufacture this? I think it could be made for like $20 and sold for under 50, and it form-fits any window.

Welcome to the forums David Roland. The thread you replied to hasn't been active in almost 5 years. Feel free post a new thread to get new responses.

Great time to revive this thread. It's 14f outside right now. You can keep your window fan.

I'll just run the central A/C next summer.

Make a wood panel that fits where the screen goes, then get a hole saw and make a bunch of holes. Install the highest CFM Delta fan you can find in each hole. Apply 12 volts of power. Profit!

Your ears may block, this is normal. Ensure your tray is in the upright position and hold on tight!

yeah, yeah, 4.5 years late, but the real solution is to figure out why you 'keep waking up in the middle of the night feeling like I need fresh air'

i guarantee that's not a ventilation problem (at least not in the traditional sense), something else is wrong

I was wondering why Futurfields sounded so reasonable all of a sudden and then I saw this thread is from 4 years ago.

It is a tad cold outside right now..
But during the warmer months there are a ton of people stuck in dorms or cheap apartments that don't have A/C and want the window open at night, but don't like the noise that it lets in..
I'm just trying to see what people think of the idea (from your replies, it's not looking good ). Maybe I should have waited for it to heat up.

Window air conditioner. It makes its own noise. Cool air might increase moldy air. However, replacing the air filter in the furnace might help also. Then there is the ever present ceiling fan.

I'll buy a nice A/C unit when I move out of a dorm and have some money in my pockets. But my university doesn't allow us to have A/C units because they're a fire hazard.. and aren't they hundreds of dollars?
Also thanks for the heads up about the moldy air.. do you think a dehumidifier in my room would help?

nah, you can get a "decent" window AC unit for about $120 or even less. ...you can certainly go way more expensive or somewhat cheaper. Not that this isn't an arbitrary amount of money, but if you are on a high floor in the dorm (less chance of being sanctioned, maybe?) then maybe it's worth it for the couple of weeks that you can actually sleep before the thing is banned from your room.

the noise from the AC is better than the noise from drunks outside the window. It can even be comforting, and you might become dependent on it, so there's that....
