How to increase signal strength on wireless network?

I have a D-LINK DI-624 router (Xtreme G, but it's on 54Mbps)

I have a DWL-G650 PCI card in the computer


The router is in one room, on the north side, and the room my computer is in is two rooms away, on the north wall

The antenna is facing my computer

However, I usually get signals of "Low" or "Good", but nothing higher

Is there something I can do/buy to increase the signal strength? Possibly an antenna with a wire, so I can place it on my desk instead of connecting the antenna straight into the computer?

What ever the signal bar shows is quite meaningless.

As a frame reference: "Speed" (Bandwidth) expectation of Ethernet Home Networks using Windows 98/2000/XP.

You have to measure the actual transfer?s speed.
