How to image Win2k NTFS Partition?

Umm... I decided that it was about time for me to ghost or drive image my Win2k partition because I cannot afford to loose my data. I have a slight problem though. I can't figure out for the life of me that this can be done. Plz Help

DriveImage will have you make 2 diskettes, in which you'll boot from in order to use the DriveImage program.
 
Well....my computer doesnt quite agree with either of you. I seem to have a dilema. I have both Ghost 6.5 and Drive Image 4.0. I would like to be able to create 700 Meg chunks of an image file so I can burn the image to cd-rw weekly. I have ghost 6.5 Professional. When I boot up Ghost, I get a lot of Adaptec SCSI errors and none of my cd-rom/cd-rw are recognized. I am running a Promise FastTrack100 IDE RAID array. I have a C:\ partition running on NTFS as my bootable partition running Win2k. I have a D:\ partition running on NTFS as my storage partition. When I try to image the C:\ partition to a file on ghost, I do not have the option of saving to my D:\ partition. This only leaves me the option of saving onto 1239 floppies or not imaging at all. Powerquest Drive Image will not even boot up. It just reboots when the program is about to start. Plz help with ur advice.

I am using Ghost 2001 and had a similar partition as you.

C = Windows 2000 (NTFS)
D = DATA (FAT 32)

Like you, my D drive was not even listed as an option (in the save to). Actually, when in the Ghost program my C drive was really the D drive. So, I saved the image to C then when I re-booted into Win2K.... the image was in my D drive.

However, I was told this is because Ghost 2001 can't save an image to a NTFS partition. Since my D partition is FAT32, I can't say...

Besides, Ghost 2001 is the exact same program as 6.5 minus the networkability, and I know 6.5 can save to an NTFS partition.

Try it, let us know....

Ummm...does ghost have the ability to save an image file to an ntfs partition or not?

Also, any ideas if the cd writing feature will work with the Plextor 1210A IDE CD-RW??

Can you store an image on an NTFS partition?

Situation:
You are using Ghost (GHOST.EXE) to create an image of a disk or partition. You want to store the image on another hard drive on the same computer, but the partition you want to use has been formatted with NTFS (the Windows NT file system).

Solution:
As a DOS program, GHOST.EXE can access only the partitions that DOS can access. Because DOS cannot read or write directly to NTFS partitions, Ghost cannot store images on a local NTFS partition.

With Ghost 6.04 and earlier, you can store images on NTFS partitions on network drives provided you use NetBIOS to access the network drive, or you have a version of Ghost that supports multicasting. This is possible because DOS can access NTFS partitions on network drives when NetBIOS is running, or when the drive has been mapped with network client software.

The bottom line:

A) Convert your "storage partition" to FAT32
B) Using P.M, make a new partition only for your back-ups (Like I have).
C) Play with 6.04 or < on a (gulp)... NetBIOS :Q

I forgot to mention, the Plextor PX-W1210A is supported!
