I have a ton of stuff in my tray that was never there before. Is there anyway to determine which programs has placed which system tray item and then remove them? thx

in most instances you can right click and disable systray icon through their own selves

also, you can hit alt+ctrl+del and determine what programs are running, and find out what use what icons etc

An easier way to get to the same point is to go to start - run - type msconfig.

See my last reply on a related issue at:
http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.cfm?catid=28&threadid=192128.

"In Win 98SE I've used 'start | programs | accessories | system tools | resource meter' and 'start | run| msconfig.exe | startup' and 'control panel | add/remove programs' to eliminate unwanted programs. Even in a new installation there are quite a few things running in the background. You are definitely correct to try and fix the problem (if there is one) now, before you add more programs and utilities - especially the 16-bit programs the article mentions - and further complicate the situation."

Good Luck.
:)

P.S.
I think PC Magazine has a system tray manager utility for downloading. Also, if you're not getting messages about 'not enough free memory,' why worry about how much is in the tray?

It's even easier to put a shortcut on the Start Menu for MS Info. It's always available then nomatter what is on the desktop.

Also, sometimes those tray icons come from WIN.INI and/or \Windows\Start\Programs\Startup.

I got into that with a beta test yesterday . . . I unchecked it in SCU/Startup, but it kept auto-rechecking. It was in the StartUp list and that renewed it with every boot.

How do you get rid of the Volume Control (aka Play Control)? It hasn't been there for a long time, and then came back today after I installed some new drivers for my SB Live. I don't use it, so I don't want it down there, but I can't find it in msconfig.

Thanks

You can get rid of volume control from the control panel, multimedia. There should be a place to uncheck volume control.
