how to ID Xbox 360 version?

My nephew has a xbox 360 and he wants to get a hard drive for it (i don't know if it has no hard drive or if it's the 4gb model). He says he can't play some of his games without it.

I know nothing about Xbox and I see that some drives work on certain models.

The product # is 08056212001313644608.

I can't seem to find any way to ID it by product # or serial # online.

You'd have to physically look at it. There were two different HDDs for the 360.

One that looked like this and went inside the console and was covered by the side panel.

One that looked like this and attached to the console on the outside.

If it installs like the following picture then you need the first one.
