How to hotwire a car?

I want to give my old '88 Grand Marquis a button start, just because it'd be so ghettoliciously awesome. I also figured it would be easy to do, since it's from 1988...however, I have absolutely no knowledge of cars, so I'm at a loss of what wires I need to cross to make it happen.

I leave my keys in the car all the time anyways, so I'm not worried about it getting stolen..it has my name spraypainted on the side of the thing, haha.

Anyone know?

Edit: Proof that it's my car :p

You can buy a starter button kit at most auto stores. You're gonna need a pretty dayum hefty switch.

Anyways, Look for Push button start, rather than hotwire.

If the car is yours, purchase the wiring diagrams Auryg! ;)

heh....you should ghetto-fab industrialize the button. Make it look like it would be a button belonging in a briefcase handcuffed to the wrist of a guy in a suit. Or use one of those octagonal industrial "Allen-Bradley" buttons you see on heavy machinery. Just kinda funny and tacky.....

...I mean hey, you've already got your name painted on the side....doesn't get much tackier than that. May as well go "ballz to the wallz".

Basically, all you are doing is powering up the fuse box, then touching the starter wire to power until it starts. You'd end up with a few wires twisted together, connected to power. And your one starter wire dangling by itself. Pretty easy to figure out with a multimeter which is which.

If only I hadn't lost my multimeter :'(

Any idea where I could get a diagram so I know which wires do what?

I also edited my first post with pictures.

Pull that ignition and start that sumbitch with a flathead.

True ghetto style is to connect a heavy gauge wire from the positive battery terminal to the negative terminal on the starter solenoid. If you want a push button, pass a wire from each through the firewall, under the dash, to the switch, which should then hang freely.
Note: this simply activates the starter, so the ignition must be turned to "ON" for this to work (preferably with key), and this just bypasses the start position on the ignition.

Heh. Same thing. Arc the high current positive terminal on the starter solenoid from the battery to the negative terminal with a screwdriver.

Disclaimer: this runs some 300 amps, so don't be a dumbass and fry yourself.

Well that'd defeat the purpose..although that would be awesome in itself. Haha.

attn: genius in this thread

so what if he bypasses the ignition switch, where the hell is he gunna go with a locked steering column and gearshift.

but anyway somewhere under the dash hes going to have a wire for accesory loads and another engine loads. energize those, there will be a hot wire under there somewhere too. then hook up a momentary push button between the hot wire and the starter solenoid relay.

Just set your car on fire and eventually the wires will melt into eachother.

The easiest thing to do is to 'pop the ignition'. Two ways to do it:

1) Screw a 3"x3/8" coarse threaded bolt into the key slot. It will take a few minutes to do this if you are not a good mechanic. After the bolt is firmly lodged in the slot, grab the bolt head with large channel locks or vise grips and actually pull the innigtion switch out of the column. You may want to sit in the passenger side and place a foot on the steering column for leverage. Once the entire ingintion switch is out you will be able to look inside the emtpy shaft and you will see a small metal tab. It will look like a small 1/4x 1/4" metal tip. Grab the tab with needle nose pliers or a screw driver with a little 'V' cut in the tip ,and turn the tab just like you would the actual key. The car will start as normal.

2) A little messier and certainly more ghettofabulous; smash the plastic area on the steering column surrounding the key slot with a hammer. This will expose the ignition switch shaft. Grab the little wing nut thingy and break it off with your channel locks. Clamp visegrips of the exposed switch at break it free with brute force. This will expose the same metal tab. Then use the same method described above to turn the tab and the car will start. Place a dark colored towel on the damaged area when you drive around so the Man can't see the obvious damage. Buy a forty at the liquoir store and cruise till the tires fall off. If the man pulls you over, act real nervous and you will get pepper sprayed. This adds to the entire ghettofabulous experience.

Hell, just jack it like some guy did my old 'Teg. Take a crowbar and stick it between the seams in the plastic clamshells surrounding the steering column directly above the ignition lock column, and reef down hard. This breaks the clamshell, the steering wheel lock (which incidentally causes permanent damage to the steering column itself, but the car is still temporarily drivable), and causes the lock column to dangle freely from the ignition switch wires. Next, unscrew the ignition switch from the back of the lock column, insert a flathead screwdriver into the switch and pretend the screwdriver is the key. *Vrooom*

Thank God for my ignition kill alarm and fuel cutoff switch!

You can´t figure out how to hotwire your car by yourself? Kids these days...

You should do what I saw in Madagascar...pull all the wires down from the ignition switch, and memorize which ones get crossed to turn the car on and start it. Be sure to have separate wires for radio+accessories, as well.
