How to hot-swap a HD?

Hi

I've got a couple of those removable harddrives installed on my computer, and every time I want to swap a harddrive I turn off the computer and swap.
Is it possible to swap harddrive without turning off the computer?
I use WinXP.

Yes it is . . . if you have it in an external hot swappable module such as USB or better yet . . . Firewire.

As for mobile rack-mounted drives, they are IDE and need to be recognized by BIOS in the boot cycle.

I use them all the time, and each has a key switch for on/off. If I turn one on while the system is booted, it powers up just fine . . . but the system cannot "see" it until a restart occurs.

Hmm... too bad. I was hoping it was possible somehow to tell Windows that this IDE harddrive is removable.
Then maybe it would be possible to "eject" it, and then Windows would automaticly "refresh" and regognize the HD.
Am I just dreaming here? This _should_ be possible. Hey Bill Gates, fix this won't you?

It's not a function of Bill Gates/Microsoft/Windows. It's a function of the BIOS and the hard drive itself.
