i've got two netgear wireless routers and i just aquired a linksys for doing voip. to ensure that the voip gets the bandwidth it needs i'd like to connect everything as follows:
cable modem -> linksys voip router -> both netgear routers and my networked printer and my main pc (linksys router has 4 ports on it)
and then attach all the other devices on my network to the two netgear routers, either wired or wireless.
my questions are:
- by default linksys is on 192.168.15.xx whereas the netgears are on 192.168.0.xx. when plugging them all together this seems to work ok (thanks to dhcp and nat they are all able to assign ip's to the attached devices and talk amoungs themselves), but devices on one subnet can't see devices on the other subnets. this will be a problem for my media center extender and also for trying to reach the admin page of one router through the other one. so, how can i resolve this? can i push them all to the subnet of my choosing? if so, any suggestions? can this cause any problems?
- while fiddling with the linksys router last night i tried hooking up my own pc to it (then linksys -> netgear -> cable modem) and it seemed like my internet access got really laggy. this surprised me since i wasn't even on a phone call, so the qos in the linksys shouldn't have needed to throttle my access to serve the phone. any thoughts on what might have been going on here, and how to solve it? do you think i'll continue to see this problem if i hook up my network as described above? if so i may not go with that topology, as the lag was really annoying. i'm not paying $45/month for comcasts 5-8mbps just to loose it to a crappy voip router! however i would ideally like to go with the topology described above to insure the best possible phone quality.
your thoughts are much appreciated!
