How to hook up surround w/ VCR out and now DVR in???

So I used to run coax RF from wall to VCR which passed thru to TV. DVD player went "in" to VCR & thus everything ultimately passed thru the VCR & VCR audio "out" to the surround receiver.

Well, now it's from the wall to the DVR & coax now stops there. DVR has component out to TV & that's as far as I've gone.

Surround is sittin' by its lonesome & DVD is sittin' by its lonesome.

Do I run the DVD into the TV as well & then run out to the surround unit??? (Actually, gotta see what outputs I have on the back of the TV......ugh). 36" Sony CRT.

Or video from DVD into TV but audio into surround???

TIA (Sorry if above sounds jarbled, I'm thinkin' outloud)

Might depend on the connections available on all the components, if you're looking to get best quality. I don't think you could have ever been getting real surround (5.1) when you were using the VCR, unless you had some amazing high-end thing that actually did allow the right inputs and outputs so that the DVD audio was properly transferred.

Best setup would be for each "player" device to have its own dedicated connections to both the TV and the receiver (depending on what types of connectors are available, in terms of quality), or if the receiver does video as well, all into that and a single connection to the TV.

But since you really don't need the audio from the DVR to the receiver, you can just ignore that. The best way will depend on your connectors on the TV then. Many TVs have a single set of component cables. Your recorded TV isn't going to be great quality no matter what, so if possible, use the component connections from the DVD player to the TV, with a digital audio cable to the receiver, or whatever audio connection you like. The DVR can do fine with an S-Video connection, or even composite, if it has those connectors. I can't imagine it only having component.

If by some chance you only have composite or component on the DVR, then you might also choose to use the component for the DVR, as composite is the lowest quality choice, and use S-Video from the DVD player. This way you at least avoid using composite for anything, and S-Video is still better quality than composite for the DVDs.

For audio, the DVR of course only needs connection to the TV, unless you want to control everything from the receiver. The DVD player would get best quality directly connected to the receiver. You COULD connect the DVR and DVD to the TV, and use the audio outputs from the TV to send all audio to the receiver, however I don't know that Dolby audio would get transferred properly that way, and every connection you make reduces quality slightly.

Thanks, Evermore.

I think I'm gonna go easy & hook all up to the TV & then just go audio out to the receiver.

I'll hook up Svideo for the DVD player but the rest will be composite/component.

I *think* that'll take care of my needs for now.

OK, now I need a suggestion for where to get some cables.........

(I know monoprice is king of HDMI, but I just need component/composite/S-video)

I noticed they actually have the DVR using composite so I'm gonna get some component for the DVR & run the DVD w/ S-video & I need cables longer than I have (6ft instead of 3ft) plus, I'll also get a longer pair of composite from the TV to the surround receiver.

Suggestions appreciated!

Thanks!
