what hardware do I need and how do I configure the router to receive the calls.

I've tried hooking the phone line from the modem to the aux port, but that doesn't work...

What are you trying to do with the modem? The AUX and console ports are interfaces for out-of-band mgmt. If you are trying to do PPP or something like that then you need a sync/async serial WIC and a cable.

Which is it? Management or PPP?

There should have been 2 rolled cables in the accessories box that came with the router-- a light blue one and a black one. You will also need the RJ-45 to DB-25 adapter with the word "MODEM" printed on the top of it. Once you get these things I can post you a quick aux-port config that sets it up correctly.
