How to hook up a router?

i have the smc barricade router and the cable modem was just installed today. unfortunately i have to share the cable connection with 3 other roomies and im not familiar with setting up a router and a cable modem so can anyone help?

do i hook the router to the computer and then the cable modem to router or modem to computer and then router to modem?

in response to your question...most routers are hooked up to the modem, and your computer is hooked to the router. your roomies' computers are then hooked up to the router (if it has a switch) if not, then i'm assuming that you're networking them with 2nd network card or hooking it up in the uplink port of the router with a hub/switch or something. on one side of this router there will be a printer port, serial port, and a port to plug your cable modem in. on the other side, there will be 4 more ports. that is where you plug in the computers. the manual should have instructions on how to set up the computers to work with the router once you have them all connected.
