How to hook up a router with a switch???

I have a 4-port Linksys router for my LAN. Now, I want to expand my LAN by buying a 5-port Linksys switch. In order to get them work, I plug 1 straight-trough cable from one of numbered-ports (1-4) on the router and plug it in to the uplink port of the switch. I did that, but it doesn't work. Anybody could help me, please???

Did you try a non-uplink port? is your cable good? are you connecting uplink to uplink?(whicn you should not with a regular cable)

First, I tried to use non-uplink port using straight-trough cable. Didn't work. then, I tried to uplink the router and switch using cross-over cable. Didn't work again. Probably the cable is bad. However, I'm still confused which way I should do.

Uplink to regular port: Straight through cable. If you want to uplink and don't have an uplink, or you just want to test that crossover, plug it into to regular ports. Uplink is just a crossed port.

We have that same exact setup.

Make sure the ports next to the uplink are not in use..

I'm not quite sure.. but the "Uplink" port may be a share with the port next to it.

You can use either or, but not both..

Thanks for all the advice guys. It works now. I plug the straight-trough cable from uplink port of the router and plug the other end to a numbered port on the switch. Cool....

Good catch man. I do that frequently. That is a shared port. I suppose that saves them money though I cant imaging how. But the immediate indication should be the lights not acting properly.

Actually, the uplink port is a straight thru and all the the regular ports are X-Over. This is how you are able to use straight patches to connect workstations and servers together.
