How to hook my TV up to stand-alone speakers?

I would like to hook my TV directly up to some standalone tower speakers that I have, without the need to go through a large AV receiver. The TV has component output, and the speakers of course just accept speaker wire.

Is there some sort of relatively inexpensive converter that I can buy to achieve this?

Thanks!

Cheap AV receiver. Component does not carry sound, it is only video. You'll need the stereo out from the composite (red and white) to goto the receiver then from the receiver to the speakers.

I realize I really didn't answer your question there. Sorry about that. I don't know of any cheap converter to do this. There are some very cheap AV receivers that accept stereo and output to speakers. That would be the best option imo.

My fault, I confused component and composite. The TV does of course have composite output. So I am looking for something to convert the Red & White RCA to my speakers, without going through a receiver. Thanks for the response, Abel

Those composites are putting out line level, which isn't enough to drive the speakers. You need something to amplify the signal.

You need a receiver to power the speakers to a level that you'll be able to hear.

Doesn't have to be fancy.

Thanks guys!

I do actually have a receiver that works. My only issue is that I don't want to run everything through the receiver, especially since it doesn't accept HD (it's an old crappy receiver).

So what I'm thinking is that I can just keep everything wired as it currently is, except run the audio out from the TV through the receiver, to the speakers. Then my assumption is that everything will work just as it does now, except all audio will come from the stand-alone speakers rather than my TV speakers. That's my hope, anyways, I'm not too knowledgeable about this stuff. But I'll test it out tonight.

What are you talking about? HD sound?? Do your speakers show video? WTF?

The TV recieves the HD signal. It displays the video part of this signal on its screen. The audio goes to its speakers, and to the line out. If you connect the line out to your reciever, you can hear it on your speakers. The speakers do not need the video signal. They do not have screens on them. Speakers are for sound. The sound goes through the reciever and to your ears.

Yep, there shouldn't be any problems with that.

Obviously not. What I'm saying is that I don't want to run my HD video sources through the receiver. My only goal is to get these speakers outputting all my sound, while leaving everything else working as it already does.

Ok... so then take audio outs from the TV into the receiver, and then speaker cable from the receiver to your speakers.
