How to Hide Files and Folders on a Mac

Hidden files are those that have the hidden attribute enabled by default. These files will remain invisible when the user tries to browse the files. The hidden files prevent the users from accidentally deleting them as it can lead to the deletion of important and confidential data. The hidden files and folders can be unhidden as well. Here is how you hide files and folders in your Mac OS X system.

Step 1
Rename the Folder with Extension ‘.noindex’

The first step is to select the particular file or folder that you wish to hide on your Mac OS System. Select the folder and rename it with the extension ‘.noindex’ as shown below.

Step 2
Open ‘Terminal’

Press the ‘Search’ symbol present at the right corner of your screen. Then you need to find and choose the ‘Terminal’ option as shown below to open the bash terminal on your Mac system.

Step 3
Type ‘chflags hidden’

Now in the terminal screen, type ‘chflags hidden’ as shown below.

Step 4
‘Drag and Drop’ the Folder to Terminal

Now 'Drag and Drop' the folder to be deleted from its location to the bash terminal screen as shown below. By doing this, the path of the folder gets automatically appended to the command in your terminal.

Step 5
Press ‘Carriage Return’

After the successful drag and drop of the folder, you will find the path of the folder’s location getting appended to the command. Now you need to press the ‘Carriage Return’ key from your keyboard.

Step 6
Folder is Hidden

On pressing the carriage return key, you will find that the chosen folder gets hidden from it’s original location in your Mac system.

You can successfully hide files and folders in your Mac OS X system by following the above steps sequentially.
