I think he wants to avoid damaging the poster, not the wall.

You could get a slide binder, loop a piece a string through it, attach it to the poster, then hang the poster by the string.

3M Poster Strips are interesting. It's like double-sided tape but you can pull a little tab to remove it without (severely) damaging the poster.

Only problem is that they're fairly thick (so your poster won't be flat) and you'll have to leave a bunch of white tabs sticking out from behind the poster.

Get a frame.
But at the end of the day you'll find that few posters have any non-intrinsic value. I tried my hardest to preserve my posters in college but they never lasted more than 2 years before being damaged in transit, basement floods, or just trying to get them off the walls.
A month later though, I never missed any of them.

They make a poster hanger. It's basically two strips of plastic. One smaller one that you slide onto the bottom for weight to keep the poster hanging down without curling, and a second one you clip to the top that has a string you can hang it from.

I used those for my posters. Work great.

goto Wal-mart, they've got cheapass poster frames for only $10. They perserve the poster and IMHO make them look a hell of a lot better.

Frames make posters look 100% better, and make your appartment/dorm/house much more upscale! Cheap ones from Michaels or Walmart are okay, but try to get some that are Metal or nice wood... not those cheap black plastic ones... though they are better than nothin'

tac sucks if you have any humidity. those 3m strips are the best thing i've used so far (the pull ones).. but be careful when removing them. i have some posters i really like, and they are laminated. any removable 3m type thing works nicely on those :) Just becareful when laminating.. kinkos messed up one of my posters (wrinkles)... grr..

When I started college like 20 years ago we used to use poster putty. It was kind of like a soft gum substance you'd stick to the wall or the back of the poster. You could put 4-6 wads of the stuff around the corners and hold a poster up on the block walls in the dorms/apartments on campus without driving nails through the block. The downside was that it DOES dry out and eventually bonds more with the paper and wall. It also can discolor the back of the poster.

Framing is the best way to go... I've also found that sometimes it's better to buy clearanced framed poster art that you don't care about....just to steal the frames. You can get poster frames, but depending on where you shop, you may pay more if you aren't including a picture no one cares about.

Magnets. Tape small piece of metal (maybe cut up piece of galvanized ductwork or something?) to wall for each magnet then magnets to hold poster to metal.

Like a couple others have mentioned, that poster putty stuff works decently. That's what I used in college to hang stuff. It leaves kind of a watermark type little splotch after while, but that's on the backside of the poster and it's a little mark so I don't think people would mind.

Old thread is old!
