how to graph functions in excel?

i was wondering how i graph functions in excel.. something like y=x. the function i need to graph is much more complicated but i think i can get the general idea if i know how to graph y=x.

Make a column of the independent variable
On the next column, define an equation referencing the first column

aka:

Column 1 (A1): 2
Column 2: "=A1^2"

Column 1, Column 2
2 4
3 9
4 16

etc.
