How to go from Single boot (win2k) to dual boot (w98x & win2k)

Ok, for the moment I have a single boot system of win2k.
win2k is running on a ntfs partition.
How can I install win98 without having to reformat that partition?
I can also install win98 on my second partition(fat32) if necessary.
But how do I get the boot menu then?

Thanks for the info

The recommended install sequence is to install Win98 first and then Win2k. This is because Win98 wants to see the boot loader as the first files on the active partion. After Win2k is loaded, it will install the boot menu.

Someone may be able to chime in here as to a better solution but I do know that if you use a third party utility, such as Partion and Boot Magic, you can set up your OS's in any order you like. Good luck.

Both myself and 2 other forum members (whose name did escape me) have an experience where we did install W2K and W98SE (note the SE) in the reverse order to the usual.

Installed W2K first and then W98SE and it stilled worked without having to repair the W2K installation. Just figured that it's an improvement in SE.

In other words if you do have SE go ahead and install it in a seperate partition to the W2K and it should be fine. But do note that your system partition should be FAT32.

To be safe, make an emergency repair disc with Win2K's backup accessory. Hopefully, you won't need it later. 🙂

When you install Win9x/ME. Use the "setup /ntldr" command. This **should* tell the installing OS to just add itself to the boot loader menu.

If that doens't work, boot with the Win2K CD and repair the boot sectory with you emergency floppy from above.
