We are going to be upgrading some G5s at my small video firm later this week or next week. We are upgrading the RAM and Hard drives. The 2 we are putting new hard drives in already have the following:

G5 #1:
160GB Main Drive (OS Drive)
250GB Secondary Drive

G5 #2:
80GB (Main Drive (OS Drive)
500GB Secondary Drive

We are planning on replacing the smaller drives (the OS drives) with either 640GB or 750GB HDDs. Is this possible? I am guessing it is and the old hdd will just need cloned to the new hdd. If this is correct what cloner should I use? Thanks!

Use CarbonCopyCloner in conjunction with an external enclosure. You will want to double check to see wht kind of connector they are using. The PowerMac G5 that I serviced in teh past had SATA drives in it.

Just clone the old OS drive to the new OS drive, shut down, drop the drive in and you will be good to go.

Instead of using an external enclosure could I put the new drive in the secondary slot, copy the OS drive to that then put the new drive in the first slot and the old storage drive in the secondary? I have never used CCC let alone any cloning program on OS X so does it only allow copying to externals or does it allow copying to internal too?
