The title basically explains it... Im looking for some way to go about researching gun clubs/ranges in my area, and if anyone had any suggestions for a first rifle, Ill only be shooting targets, theres not much hunting in LA.

My second favorite joke has the punch line of "you don't come here for the hunting, do you?"

Start with a .22.....
see of you want to go any further....

Just my .22 LOL BWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Added: I like skeet and trap shooting. I'm trying to get my brother to put a sporting clays range in at his Gun Club in South Carolina.

As far as guns go, get yourself a (used) .22. Very inexpensive (for the gun and the ammo), and size really doesn't matter when you're shooting paper targets (unless they're very far away).

I have to agree with mugsy. Get yourself a .22 cailiber rifle to start. You'll use up a lot of ammo when your first learning and .22 ammo is dirt cheap (a "brick" of 500 rounds is about $12).

I bought a Ruger 10/22 a while ago for $150. Nice little rifle, no kick at all, and cheap ammo.

I would never go used. You do not know how well a gun has been kept, how many rounds have gone through it, or how worn some of the parts are. Besides, .22s are cheap. go new for those.

Personally though, I would just go all out and get a .308 or a 30-30 round. Reach out and touch someone! :D

it'll make him start flinching.

that's why the military used to train people starting with .22's. you'll learn not to flinch.. if you start on the big stuff, you'll learn some nasty habits.

edit:

in regards to the used/new, take someone with you who knows their stuff when browsing. you definitely want to pick up a good one, used or not. if you can afford it, i reccommend a 77-.22. it's a bolt action 22, not too expensive. but bolt actions are real nice to learn with. and a hell of a lot easier to clean. :)

.22 are great if you just want to shoot targets. as someone else said you can get a brick of ammo cheap.

I had a .22 that was 10 years old. someone stole it about 5 years ago. man i loved that rifle. thinking of getting onother since they are pretty cheap.
