How to go about a traffic study?

We heavily use thin clients with citrix - so we very little data going out to remote offices and clients -

But that means we move enourmous chunks locally among servers in our server room.

We are going to open another branch - and I want to use this to propose upgrading our switches to gigabit and using our current 9xxx catalysts at the new location.

What's the best way to go about proving it will benefit us? Never attempted a traffic study before.

Any good utilities out there? SNMP?

MRTG can provide a quick way to get graphs up that management can visualize. If you use any type of network management software it might be able to provide the same functionality.

you may also find out that you aren't using nearly as much bandwidth as you think you are.

that being said, it is common practice for servers to use 1000 Base-T these days.

mrtg is great...if you install an SNMP agent on the server, you can also monitor right on it's interface, as other things like disk space, CPU usage, etc. Good long term tool
