What's the norm amount?
Cash or check?
Envelope (what color) or no envelope?
What else should I know about?

Find out what the dinner plates are at the restaurant. Usually, $50.00 per person is good. If you're rich... then just write them a blank check.

Buy a nice card and put the $$ in it. We received mostly checks at our wedding but appreciated the cash as we were leaving for our honeymoon the next morning and it came in handy :)

EDIT: As for amount, we got anywhere from $20 to $150 (uncle)

I think I'm going to give $100 cash to my friends that are getting married (23 and 24 years of age). I just got out of college in 3 months ago and just started my job. I think I'm being fair, I would give more if I could afford it.

Most card stores sell special cards/envelopes for cash gifts at weddings, etc.

As for the amount, we don't know enough about the type of wedding, your relationship to the couple, financial positions, etc.

Yeah, I'm thinking either $50 or $100.
A card is a good idea, I guess.
We are friends, not best friends yet.
I think we are all well off being tech profession.

Agreed. I had a friend of mine give me $50 and I was very surprised (pleasantly of course :))

Check is acceptable (although cash is preferred).

Walk up to the groom, deposit the folded bills in his breast pocket and gentle slap him on the cheek twice, then point at his face while saying, "Buy her somethin' nice." Finish with a wink.

What????? You've never seen a gangster movie?

You give it to the bride and groom at the recieving line in a nice envelope and say something cheesy like "here is a little something to help you get started" and give the bride a little peck on the cheek, and the groom a firm handshake.

Of course in the gangster movies they are really thick envelopes.

Write them a check for $50. In the "For" section, write "Thanks for the Threesome!"

I just did it yesterday at work
there's a guy here at work is getting marry this Saturday
Which I won't be there...but I wrote a cheque and put it
inside a wedding card thing and handed it to him yesterday.
It's not the best way..but still that was my only option.

Sounds like $100. is fair!

My rule of thumb...
Depends where the reception is going to be.
If it's an expensive hotel, then ~$150. per person is the normal rate.
If it is in a nice place, then $100. is sufficient.
If it is in a place that is not fancy, you can get away with $50. per person.

just my .02

check for a $100 is good, if u know the person well. good friends and cousins of mine usually get $100. immediate family there is no limit to how much to give. a friend that u know and hang out with sometimes $75. its not like its an everyday thing so it doesnt hurt to give a little more than $50, unless its a crappy place and a buffet style type setting. i think $50 is old school when things were cheaper

how much would you spend if you got a gift? give that much in cash in a card in an envelope
