How to get your web site found on search engines

The company i work for is small, and we just(about a year ago) got a site up and running. Now why, after a year, does it not show up on search sites ie. google or yahoo?

people have to link you to show up on google, the more links the better!

wtf? no... search for bmw 2002 restoration on google. I am on the first page, mostly for the fact that it has those words in the title (blue bar). Also META tags help, but i dont use them.

most search engines yes, but google is a bit different, or so i've learned in my attempts to get listed
