How to get windows 7 key from windows 10

Hi,
I'm giving my old computer parts to my little brother. I have kept my Windows 7 key from my old machine and transferred it to my new machine. My little brother has a copy of windows 7 on his old computer, but he says "someone" has scratched the CD Key off the case. He has also upgraded his PC to windows 10. Is there a way to get the CD key off the machine with out downloading some dodgy looking executable?

Also as my old rig has windows 7 already installed, can I just swap the CD key somehow on the operating system?

Upgrade installs of Win10 use a digital entitlement, so anything in the OS itself with the key in it or any key recovery tools are going to pull the generic install key and not your old Win7 key.

You *could* roll back the upgrade and *then* run a key recovery tool and you might get the real key.

Anyway to get that when the drive is toast and you're not able to boot into Windows?

I'm working on a computer where the lady upgraded from 7 to 10. Drive went bad and the Windows 7 key on the bottom of the laptop has 2 digits scratched off the label 🙁 Not sure how to proceed.

Assuming that she had a "digital entitlement" license for Windows 10, then why can't you just pop a new drive in, and re-install Windows 10 clean, and not supply a key when you install it, and then it should activate again when it goes on-line.

Thanks.
I had been looking for a copy of Windows 10 all day. Finally figured out that you could download a tool from Microsoft to put a clean copy of it on a USB stick.

I guess I was too shocked to realize that it would be so easy. It worked flawlessly with the key she got in the Win 7 to 10 upgrade. Now I just have to find some drivers for the touchpad and figure out what the heck Office 2007 Enterprize is. I'm assuming it's something the manufacturers use.
