I use Winamp to listen to streamed music. I've always been happy with the way it sounds. This morning I was browsing Digitally Imported and fired up some music. This was in my living room using my HTPC with a pretty decent 5.1 surround system. My player settings had somehow changed and it opened the music using the firefox browser flash player. I went in and changed my settings to have it open in Winamp and when it did I realized that it sounded awful compared to the flash player. I went into Winamp and tried tweaking the equalizer for a long time and could never get the clarity and bass that the flash player had. I also noted that the flash player distributed the music more evenly between my center speaker and the front/left and front/right speakers.
So...is Winamp just a pathetic player? Is there a way to configure it to sound better? I tried looking for equalizer presets but found that often people would state "music is an individualistic choice so don't use presets"
And what would cause the flash player to distribute the sound differently than Winamp to the speakers?
When it comes to music and the PC I'm rather limited in my knowledge. I'm just disappointed to realize how much better the music could be sounding now that I've heard another option.
I do like the idea of steaming to a program like winamp vs. a browser since it's a great way to bookmark all the different streams I like. I'd prefer not to rely on internet browsers for my music listening.
