I'm asking this question here because so far all of my google searches have been unable to find an answer to this question. How do I get Windows Vista Pro to remember each folder's view settings - i.e. "Details" as opposed to "List", "Large Icons", etc. and also the columns visible (i.e. Type, Size, Date modified, etc.) with each file. I set these preferences for each folder, but sooner or later Windows forgets them and always goes back to Large Icons with no columns visible.

To fix this problem, reset the registry settings for folders:

Windows Vista or Windows 7

1. Delete the following registry subkeys:
  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags

  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\BagMRU

  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\Bags

  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\BagMRU

  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\BagMRU

  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags

For x64-based versions of Windows Vista or Windows 7, delete the following registry subkeys:

  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Wow6432Node\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags

  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Wow6432Node\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\BagMRU
2. Re-create the following registry subkeys:
  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\BagMRU

  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags

For x64-based versions of Windows Vista or Windows 7, re-create the following registry subkeys:

  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Wow6432Node\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags

  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Wow6432Node\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\BagMRU
3. Create and then set the BagMRU Size registry value to 5000 in the registry subkeys that you created in Step Two.
