There has been a great deal in discussion lately about how to properly get USB 2.0 working correctly when using an Intel 845E, 845G, or the Gigabyte 8IHXP motherboard which utilizes the ICH4 hub. I have written a brief summary below that I PM'ed to a user here who also was having a problem, so I thought that I might as well post a topic concerning it incase others were also having this problem. If you follow the steps below, you should be up and running with USB 2.0 enabled on ALL Intel USB ports. As far as the Nec USB 2.0 controller that is also onboard the Gigabyte 8IHXP, 8IEXP, just use the Nec drivers off the installation CD.
Here are the latest Intel INF drivers, Intel INF. All OS's supported...
D/L this file which is the Intel USB 2.0 drivers.
Also, D/L this file which is an update for WinXP.
If you are running Win2000, then D/L this file instead. No other files are needed for Win2000.
Run the top file above 1st, reboot. Then the 2nd, reboot. Then the update. Now select the ! device in Device Manager, and tell it to find the driver on its own. It should come up with "Intel PCI to USB Enhanced Controller" and tell it to install it. After these steps, all will be working fine.
If you are using Win98/WinME/NT, you are SOL as Intel is not supporting these operating systems with USB 2.0.
Hope this helps you out. I have been running the 8IHXP for a couple of weeks now with no problems to report. This board has been very stable and fast! Believe it or not, WinXP feels snappier with RDRAM compared to my old DDR ram boards. Maybe its just me, but this board rocks!
