How to get to 'pure dos' in XP pro?

I would like to flash my bios, and I need to be in a pure dos mode. I have tried to get there using what windows calls a ms-dos boot disk but I got an I/O error, not a dos prompt.

you don't, you can't, don't even try. Sorry.
(Try installing 6.22 in a small partition)

(I beleive)

As I remember you can make a dos boot disk from XP. I don't have XP here, but as I remember it was an option when I formated a floppy.

I used DrDOS 7.X from Bootdisk.com and it work great for BIOS flashing. It loads the bare minimum to boot to DOS and leaves plenty of room on the floppy disk for your flashing program and the BIN file.

Yep,I use it for my Epox now and then for flashing my BIOS,click on "My computer", right click on floppy icon & select format, and choose and tick " create MS-DOS startup disk".

YOu can also do it the same way through Windows Explorer.
