Well I upgraded my 1800xt 512mb to 8800GTS 512mb - seems to be marginally faster. One gotcha is atitool can't read the temp :)

I presume there is a simlar tool for nvidia cards (that will report temp) ?

rivatuner ;)

for it to work with the 512Mb GTS you need to edit the RivaTuner.cfg file with note pad.

Under [GPU_10DE] change the G92= 610h-61Fh to look like this G92= 610h-61Fh,600h

For one thing it allows you to overclock the Shader Clocks on the Nvidia 8800 series cards.

Well i have no clue how to get rivatuner to work but ntune sez the temp is 72C after 30 minutes of crysis demo @ 1600x1200. Sound reasonable or hot ?
(default settings - not overclock - cpu is 41c)

72C is fine for that card.

You can adjust fan speed with nTune as well.

I don't think Rivatuner works with the 8800GTS G92 at this point (at least it didn't initially) without some kind of hack.

ntune is fine if you are just monitoring temps.

If you want to overclock use RivaTuner

I feel ultra dense but i could not figure out how to adjust settings or even watch temp with rivatuner. With ntune it was very intuitive - click click and it was done...
