How to get SMC7008BR router to play nice with Kazaa Lite/WinMX/emule, etc?

Hi guys,
I've been using my SMC 7008BR router for quite a while now, using DMZ since I can't otherwise run Kazaa, WinMX and other file sharing programs properly. I've read guides on the ports to forward, and I've tried forwarding them, but they didn't work. So, does anyone else own a 7008BR and got these 2 programs to work?

Currently my WinMX is set to listen to port 16699 for incoming TCP connections and port 16257 for outgoing UDP packets. Kazaa Lite is set at the default port 1214 for incoming connections. emule is using clientport 4662 and udp port 4672.

Under my router settings "Virtual Server", I've set the following settings, but they don't work
Service Port . . . . . Server IP . . . . . . . .Enable
16699 . . . . . . . . . 192.168.123.112 . . Yes
16257 . . . . . . . . . 192.168.123.112 . . Yes
4672 . . . . . . . . . . 192.168.123.112 . . Yes
4662 . . . . . . . . . . 192.168.123.112 . . Yes

Should I be setting the port forwards under "Virtual Server" or "Special AP"? What EXACTLY are the settings I should use?

I'm not sure about those SMC routers.. but is there a setting where you can place an IP address in the "DMZ" ??

This will allow outside traffic to communicate with whatever system's IP you enable in the DMZ

Weerd .. I have the SMC 7004BR and have had good success with Kazaa (Lite) on all of my PCs. I do see a lot of "more sources needed" of which I'm certain the router is the culprit but this is usually less than 50% of the downloads. I can almost always find someone else who has what I need. I rarely put ANYTHING into the DMZ except for a UT2K3 server on occasion to allow friends to connect via their cable modems. Even then, I use Black ICE on that box so I'm STILL secure. Have you tried a netstat -a from a DOS window to see what ports may be necessary ?

just as a sidenote. There is a UPnP enabled firmware for the 700XBR routers now.

Get it here: SMC

Have you tried setting the open ports in "special applications"? I open up certain ports for edonkey in special applications section, and it's been working fine for many months. Do you have any other software firewall running?

Thanks for the replies...

Josephlb, DMZ is what I'm currently running, and its the only way I can get it to run. However, I would like to still be behind my NAT firewall if possible, just in case.

WT, netstat -a gives me a whole lot of ports listening. I think I already know the ports to open(based on the Kazaa/WinMX/emule FAQs I've read), but I'm not exactly sure how to do so.

knutp, what exactly is uPnP? I'm using firmware R1.93s now, which I believe is the most recent version on SMC's website. The links you gave me provide V.1.94a, 1.95c and 1.95n though, which I assume are newer? Which one should I get, the newest one? What are the benefits/differences?

Doh!, I'm really quite confused about this whole port opening/forwarding thing. On the one hand, there's the "Virtual Server", OTOH there's "Special Apps", both of which are supposed to handle stuff to do with ports...which one exactly do I use and how? And no, I don't have any other software firewall running or even installed.

Thanks again, looking forward to all replies...
