I try to get rid of old recycle bin files, but I got "File system error" message. I checked the properties of the files and found that their attribute are all checked and gray out.

I've had this happen to me before. I can't tell you why it happens.

The attribute thing is normal for a file residing in the Recycle Bin.

Just for grins, try rebooting and see if you can then empty the Recycle Bin through normal means. If it doesn't work, then you should be able to highlight the file(s) and select Delete.

My guess is that next time it will work fine.

It's happened to me once or twice before on both my and other peoples machines.

If it says something is wrong with the file system, perhaps run ScanDisk and see if there are any problems.

This happens to be a lot, and in all Windows 98, Windows NT 4.0 and sometimes W2K. Though I run Litestep, so I don't tend to pay that much attention to the Recycle bin, so I've set the bin limit to something tiny so that files keep getting deleted fairly often.

The only remedy that I've found for this problem is to reboot the machine, then whatever was causing the problem doesn't seem to anymore and you can recycle to your hearts content. Sometimes I've actually found that the desktop icon for the recycle bin says that I've got stuff in there, but I actually don't..it's a little lost..Regards
